
Wrestling Opens Season With Positive Showing at Southeast Open

ROANOKE, Va. – Sophomore Kyle Gorant rolled through the 133-pound Freshman/Sophomore bracket en route to a second-place finish Sunday at the Southeast Open.
Gorant opened his second campaign with a first-round technical fall, 15-0, and cruised with a pair of convincing decision's, 8-1 and 7-1, respectively. The Coopersburg, Pa., native fell to Levi Englman of Ferrum to place second on the day.
After dropping his first collegiate bout in the 125 Freshman/Sophomore Championship round, freshman Cian Fischer bounced back, pinning three straight opponents on his way to the third-place bout. The third-place match was decided a no-contest due to his opponent, Brandon Wittenburg of Virginia Tech, reaching the NCAA six-bout limit.
Classmate Steven Newell got his collegiate career off to a fast start, earning a first period pin in 3:31. Newell then cruised to an 11-2 major, before falling in the 174-pound Freshman/Sophomore semifinal round to finish fourth for the tournament.
After falling in his opening match, sophomore heavyweight Finlay Holston rolled to three straight victories including a first period fall over Southern Conference foe Robbie Adelstein of VMI and finished sixth in his class.
Sophomore Evan Clark missed 2018-19 due to injury and made up for lost time quickly, competing in five bouts with a pair of victories by way of decision to open his win account on the 197-pound Freshman/Sophomore side of things and take sixth.
"All-in-all the arrows are pointing in the right direction," said head coach Andy Lausier. "I'm seeing progress across the board, but we need to embrace the tough situations in matches and let it bring out the best in our wrestling."
Senior's Conor Fenn and Hunter Costa both added to their career win totals on the day. Picking up their first victories for Coach Lausier's squad were Erik Eva, Dalton Blankenship, David Loniewski and Noah Burstein.
Davidson returns to the mat Sunday, Nov. 10 at the Journeyman Collegiate Classic in Troy, N.Y.
