BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – After opening with a one-under 71, Alex Ross was even on his afternoon round and just two strokes off the lead when the 2019 Mountaineer Invitational was suspended due to darkness.
The 54-hole tournament is being played on the Par 72, 7,308-yard Pete Dye Golf Club layout.
Battling through wind, rain and cold conditions, Ross (-1) is just one of three players under par after day one. In addition to an eagle at the Par 4 third hole, the junior finished the day with four birdies.
Coming off a third-place showing in the Wildcats' season opener, Ross is two back of individual-leader Kevin Scherr (Youngstown State) and one back of Alex Maguire (Florida Atlantic).
Clayton Tribus (+8), Viraj Garewal (+15), Dean Naime (+15) and Ethan Hall (+17) are also in the lineup for Davidson (+31), which was six strokes out of fifth when play was halted.
Florida Atlantic (+4) leads the 15-team field by a stroke over the tournament host, while Southern Miss is 15 off the pace in third.
The second round will resume at 8:30 a.m. with continuous play into the final 18 holes.
