NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Davidson junior Daniel Valmassei has been named Atlantic 10 Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Performer of the Week, the league announced Tuesday afternoon.
A diver from Lake Lotawana, Mo., Valmassei swept the 1- and 3-meter events in the Wildcats' victory over VMI on Friday, Oct. 11.
"Daniel has worked incredibly hard on improving his athleticism and refining his form on the diving boards," said diving coach Greg Ferrucci. "This hard work proved to pay off at our meet against VMI."
At VMI, Valmassei totaled 334 points in the 1-meter, winning by more than 70 points, and he won the 3-meter by more than 40 points with a score of 304.55.
On the 1-meter, he replaced his back 1 1/2 pike with a higher degree of difficulty, back 2 1/2 tuck. The dive was awarded 15 points higher than his previous award in the backwards category. He also improved his reverse 2 1/2 tuck, increasing his score by 4.5 points.
"Every day, he shows up to practice with intention and trains with a lot of intensity," said Ferrucci. "Daniel has already proven to have a profound impact on the renaissance of the diving program at Davidson. We are excited to watch him grow and positively influence the culture of the team at Davidson."
