DAVIDSON — The Davidson field hockey team returns to action this weekend with home matches against UMass and William & Mary at Belk Turf Field.
Friday's 5:15 p.m. match with UMass is the Wildcats' fifth in Atlantic 10 play.
Davidson and UMass share a few connections.
Wildcats head coach Zoe Almquist spent the 2016 season on the UMass coaching staff, as the Minutewomen won the Atlantic 10 title, and Davidson assistant coach Shauna Rankin-Byrne was a member of that team. In all, Rankin-Byrne helped the Minutewomen win three A-10 championships, and she served as a UMass volunteer assistant last year.
The Wildcats are coming off a 3-2 win at Towson last Sunday. Junior back McGee Roman scored her team-best fourth goal of the season, while freshmen Emma Coleman and Anna Sharp notched their first career goals.
Senior goalkeeper Sarah Zeszotarski ranks second in the A-10 with 6.50 saves per game and is third in the A-10 with a .722 saves percentage.
Scouting UMass
The Minutemen enter 4-7 overall and 1-2 in the A-10 and have three returning A-10 second team selections from last year in Lucy Cooper, Sophie de Jorge and Georgie McTear. McTear and Cooper have scored three goals each, which is tied for the team lead with Jess Beach.
Last weekend, UMass defeated No. 25 Northeastern 2-0, then lost 2-1 to New Hampshire.
Scouting William & Mary
Davidson hosts William & Mary in a non-conference contest Sunday at noon.
The Tribe is 5-5 entering Friday's home match with Hofstra and has won four of its previous five. Christie Van de Kamp leads William & Mary with four goals.
