
Rooney Tabbed Atlantic 10 Player of the Week

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Mason Rooney of the Davidson volleyball team has been named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week for matches played Aug. 27 – Sept. 2, as announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon.

"We put a lot of responsibility on Mason and she's really embraced all aspects of her role this year," said head coach Chris Willis. "There aren't many players who score, facilitate, and defend the way she does. She had a great week, and we're looking forward to more of the same."

For the week, Rooney recorded a pair of triple-doubles (three double-doubles), totaling 44 kills (2.75 per set), 87 assists (5.44), 31 digs (1.94) and 4 total blocks.

A senior from Atlanta, Ga., Rooney began the week with her first of two triple-doubles in Davidson's thrilling 3-2 win over cross-county rival Charlotte. In the 'Cats third straight victory, the setter/opposite recorded 10 kills, 30 assists and 10 digs to go along with 3 total blocks.

In Davidson's upset win over Mississippi State on day two of the Appalachian Invitational, Rooney put together a 15-kill, 26-assist, 10-dig effort, while connecting on an impressive .500 of her attacks.

She concluded the trip to Boone with her third double-double, tallying 10 kills (.320 hitting percentage) and 18 assists against Clemson.

For her performance at the Appalachian Invitational, she was named to the all-tournament team, her second nod on the young season.

Davidson (4-3) is in the midst of a week break before returning to the court at the College of Charleston Invitational. The Wildcats will play UNC Asheville (10 a.m.) and Charleston Southern (2 p.m.) Saturday, before concluding the event against the host Cougars Sunday at 1 p.m.
