Solid Day One for 'Cats at Davidson M. Tennis Invite

DAVIDSON, N..C. — The Davidson men's tennis team had a nice start to the Davidson Invitational Saturday at the Davidson Tennis Courts, as three Wildcats went 2-0 on the day in singles play. Competing at the invitational along with Davidson is Appalachian State, Queens and USC Upstate.
Axel Fries, Sam Kavarana and Camden Mazzoni each won both of their singles matches against USC Upstate and Appalachian State on the day. The two-time A-10 All-Second Teamer Fries opened with a 6-3, 7-6 win at No. 1 and then followed up with a 7-5, 7-5 triumph again at the top spot against his Mountaineer opponent. The two wins gave him 32 points on the day, each worth 16 points.
The freshman Kavarana had a nice Fall debut for the 'Cats, scoring a pair of wins at No. 5 for 16 total points. He regrouped from dropping his first set, 7-5, to his Spartan opponent to win a 6-2 set and then earned a 10-7 super tie-breaker win. Against ASU, Kavarana gave up only three games in a 6-3, 6-0 decision.
Rounding out the undefeated on the day in singles was sophomore Camden Mazzoni, earning six points. He picked up four of those points at No. 7 vs. USCU with a 6-1, 6-2 victory and then followed with a dominating 6-0, 6-2 decision against his Appalachian State opponent at No. 8.
Scoring other wins on the day vs. Appalachian State was Yash Parikh at No. 3 with a 6-4, 6-1 victory (12 points), Douglas MacIntosh at No. 6 with a 7-5, 7-6 triumph (6 points) and Matthew Rose with a 7-6, 6-2 decision at No. 7 (4 points).
Thomas Mason won a 7-6, 6-4 match at No. 2 against his USC Upstate opponent to earn 14 points. Freshman Brooks Green had two tough defeats, falling in a super tie-breaker against USC Upstate after splitting his first two sets and then dropping a pair of tie-breakers against Appalachian State.
In doubles action during the day, MacIntosh and Mazzoni scored a 6-1 win vs. ASU at No. 2 (6 points), and Mason along with Kavarana picked up a 6-4 decision at No. 4 for two points.
Davidson continues on with the invitational Sunday on the hard courts of Davidson Tennis.
