DAVIDSON, N.C. — Sophomore Katie Turner had the chance to represent Davidson as one of 28 basketball student-athletes from the Atlantic 10 Conference to recently attend the league's Leadership Summit, held Sept. 22-23 in Washington, D.C. The student-athletes were selected by their head coaches.
It was the league's second annual Leadership Summit. The two-day event included sessions on self-evaluation, leadership mindset and habits, emotional intelligence, creating success plans, and creating a culture of teambuilding. A-10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade led a session on leadership opportunities and career launch. In addition, former collegiate and NBA Championship coach Kevin Eastman facilitated the seminar providing strategic instruction on leadership development and growth.
We had a chance to sit down with Katie and ask her about her experience at the Leadership Summit...
Q: What were some of the takeaways from the Summit over the weekend?
Some takeaways for me are ways in which I am able to grow and improve my own qualities as a leader, both on and off the court. There were key buy-ins that I can take back to the team that we can use to be successful this season, and the mentality needed in order to elevate the Davidson Women's Basketball to a championship level.
Q: How will what you learned this past weekend translate for you personally, as well as for the team, on and off the court?
I was able to reflect on my own leadership strengths and weaknesses. Moving forward, I will continue to grow in my strengths on and off the court, as well as constantly work on and improve my weaknesses so that I can become the best leader that I can be in the gym and in life. I will also share some of the most important things that I learned with the team with regards to establishing and maintaining a championship program here at Davidson.
Q: How did it feel to be chosen to take part in this leadership summit and represent Davidson?
It was an honor to represent Davidson. I am so proud to be a part of Davidson Women's Basketball. Being able to reflect the ideals of our team in a room full of our competitors was an opportunity that I am so thankful I was given.
Q: The key speaker of the Summit was former collegiate and NBA Championship coach Kevin Eastman. What were some of the key ideas he shared that were helpful for you?
The best answer I can give is that there are far too many to count. I came back and I told my teammates that Mr. Eastman made me want to run through a brick wall – that's how motivating he was! If I had to pick two things that really stuck out to me, they would be that people will follow the person before they follow the mission – stay true to your values and base every decision you make off of them, and 2nd, that silence condones – if you don't say anything, you're allowing it to happen.
Q: What were you able to learn from other student-athletes that attended the Summit on leadership?
I learned that other student-athletes are just as eager and just as willing to learn about leadership as I am. However, I believe that leadership is not something that can be taught. It is something that people can grow in, but a person's innate ability to lead others cannot be taught. It helped me reflect on the grit and ambition our team has, and most importantly, the love we have for each other.
