GREENSBORO, N.C. – Team captain Jordan Hill's goal in the 94th minute lifted Davidson to a 1-0 victory over UNC Greensboro in non-conference action Saturday evening at UNCG Soccer Stadium.
Tonight's contest was delayed more than two hours due to lightning and severe weather.
With the win, the Wildcats improve to 1-1-0, while the Spartans suffer their first setback falling to 2-1-0.
Hill's first career game-winner came following a Ned Morrissett corner, which Louis Evans got a head on directing it to his fellow defender.
Jackson Bracy had a scoring chance for Davidson in the second half when he made an aggressive run through the back line before a collision knocked the ball over the end line.
Davidson's Sawyer Gaffney was impressive in goal for the 'Cats recording a personal-best 6 saves en route to his third career shutout.
Up Next
Davidson returns home to 1992 Team Field and Alumni Stadium for a 7 p.m. kick-off against Furman.
Comments from Head Coach Matt Spear
Important win on the road tonight for first win against a confident opponent. Overtime wins are euphoric, so a big thrill for the guys to see it through.
The guys handled the two-hour lightning delay fine with a dance competition in the locker room, and they came out well for the first half. In the second half UNCG caused us some discomfort with long throw-ins and corner kicks, but we handled it.
Very excited for Jordan to score the goal in his socks - his cleat fell off right before he shot it! Happy to score on a set piece - Ned put the corner in the right spot, Louis won the header and it fell to Jordan.
Solid team defending for the shutout and clean sheet for Sawyer. John Dale and Mateo Alzate are combining well at center mid and good spark off the bench by Jackson.
