DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson women's cross country team hopes to build off a stellar 2017 campaign when they hit the trails this season.
HUNGRY FOR MORE
The Wildcats return three of their five scorers from the 2017 Atlantic 10 Championship squad including a pair of All-Conference team members, Caroline Yarbrough and Maddie Hunter. Yarbrough, a three-time All-Conference honoree will look for the career sweep. Susannah Cate also returns as a scoring member of the 2017 third placed team, while Sophia Mills competed in the NCAA Southeast Regional for the squad.
KEY LOSSES
Sarah Sears, the 2017 A-10 runner-up, and Laurel Sheffield, another All-Conference team member from a year ago, both left their mark on the program. The pair also excelled in the classroom, landing on the A-10 All-Academic team, while Sears' earned a prestigious Atlantic 10 Postgraduate Scholarship. Davidson also looks to replace Sierra Ponthier, a Watson Fellowship recipient.
WELCOME TO THE FAMILY
Head coach Jen Straub welcomed five members to the class of 2022, the largest class in recent years. The squad consists of four seniors, five juniors and three sophomores and the five newcomers.
2018 OUTLOOK
Davidson enters the season ranked 11th in the USTFCCCA Southeast Regional Ranks and was selected third in the A-10 Preseason Coaches Poll. The A-10 had four teams ranked in the preseason regional ranks including Dayton and Richmond, both selected ahead of Davidson in the coaches poll. Yarbrough and Hunter hope to return as All-Conference runners, while Cate, Mills and the rest of the 'Cats look to contribute to the success.
WHERE CAN I SEE THEM?
The Wildcats open the season Friday, Aug. 31 at the Charlotte Opener. Davidson then heads to the Winthrop/ADIDAS Invitational (Sep. 15) to preview the NCAA Southeast Regional course. The regional is set for Friday, Nov. 9. After Winthrop, Davidson heads to the Louisville Sports Commission Classic (Sep. 29) and rounds out the tune-up stage of the schedule at the Royals Cross Country Challenge (Oct. 12). The A-10 Championship heads to Mechanicsville, Va. hosted by Richmond on Saturday, Oct. 27, while the NCAA Championship takes place in Madison, Wisc. On Saturday, Nov. 17.
