Volleyball Drops 2018 Opener in Straight Sets

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson volleyball dropped their 2018 opener Friday, falling in straight sets to Central Arkansas at Belk Arena by scores of 25-17, 25-22, and 27-25 to begin the annual Wildcat Classic.
Senior stalwart Mason Rooney delivered a strong final debut, registering a double-double with 10 kills and 17 assists, pulling in a .643 hitting efficiency. Sophomore middle Ellie Crosley was also impressive, collecting eight kills on a .538 clip with six total blocks.
Three Wildcat freshmen made their rookie debuts in middle hitter Alison Jennings , who tallied two big kills late in the third frame, outside Hattie Rodriguez, who posted eight slams, and defensive specialist Malia Kay.
The two squads battled it out in the opening stanza, with the Wildcats staying within two points of the Sugar Bears until late in the frame, when UCA widened the gap at 22-15 before going on to take the set 25-17.
The Wildcats took a four-point lead early in Set 2 before three-straight misplays switched the lead to Central Arkansas' favor for the remainder of the game.
In the final set, the 'Cats kept it close, forcing two extra points thanks to late-frame kills from Jennings and senior right side Katharine Franz.
Junior Josie Treadwell made her career debut at libero, logging 15 digs.
Davidson returns to action Saturday, facing Marist at noon and concluding the tournament against William & Mary at 6:00 p.m.
