DURHAM, N.C. – Davidson baseball moved back into the win column Tuesday, downing NC Central 7-0 at Durham Athletic Park and sweeping the two-game set.
With the victory, the 'Cats improve to 31-16 overall and NCCU drops to 27-24.
Freshman Pete Bloomberg picked up his first collegiate win, tossing five innings allowing just three hits. The right hander retired nine batters in a row and faced just two batters over his minimum. Sophomore Jaret LaCagnina came one out away from his first collegiate save, tossing 3.2 shutout innings of relief, striking out five.
Senior Andrew Born and sophomore Brett Centracchio both turned in multi-hit days for the 'Cats with two hits each. Centracchio also drove in three, and junior Justin Lebek, despite recording a hit, reached base twice and posted two RBI. Veteran duo Cam Johnson and Alec Acosta each scored twice.
The 'Cats wasted no time, plating five runs in the first inning. Born led off the game with a single to right field, and then three consecutive walks to senior duo Cam Johnson and Alec Acosta and junior Eric Jones brought Born home. The seniors then came home on a long single to right field from Centracchio, putting the 'Cats up 3-0.
A sacrifice fly from Lebek brought Jones home, and then a double down the right field line from junior Max Bazin scored Centracchio and gave Davidson a 5-0 lead.
The 'Cats added a run in the fifth, when Acosta was hit by pitch to start the frame, moving up on a single from Jones and scoring again on a Centracchio connection- this one a hard hit single back up the middle.
Davidson added cushion in the seventh, after Johnson singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, took third on a bunt single from Acosta, and scored on Lebek's second sac fly.
The Wildcats wrap up their 2018 midweek schedule Wednesday, hosting Presbyterian in a 4:00 p.m. first pitch.
