NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Davidson women's track and field and cross country senior Sarah Sears was honored as a recipient of an Atlantic 10 Postgraduate Scholarship, announced by the league office Thursday.
Sears, a Latin American Studies major, posted an impressive senior campaign on the track and in the trails. The Arlington, Va., native posted a runner-up finish at the 2017 A-10 Cross Country Championship and backed it up by earning Most Outstanding Track Performer of the Meet honors during the 2018 A-10 Indoor Track Championship. In all, Sears won four individual A-10 titles - the indoor 5k and mile and the outdoor 5k and 10k.
The A-10 Postgraduate Scholarship awards $70,000 in funding for 14 graduating student-athletes, $5,000 each, to be used towards full-time enrollment in a graduate or professional program.
Not only was Sears successful in competition, but also in the classroom. She was selected to the A-10 All-Academic Team for both the cross country and indoor track and field seasons. Sears also earned the Latin American Studies prize awarded for original research and rigorous coursework in her major and received a Davidson Research Fellowship, a competitive summer research grant. Her thesis, "Photographing the Border: The Politics of Visual Culture, Identity and Violence During the Mexican Revolution," received high honors.
Sears was also the recipient of Davidson's prestigious Rebecca A. Stimson Award, given to the school's Most Outstanding Female Senior Athlete. She is set to compete at the NCAA East Region Preliminary Round Saturday at the University of South Florida.
