'Cats to Face Richmond in A-10 Tournament Opener

ARLINGTON, Va. -- Davidson baseball will begin its fifth-straight postseason Wednesday, facing fourth-seeded Richmond in the opening round of the 2018 Atlantic 10 Championships. The fifth-seeded Wildcats will play the Spiders at 5:00 p.m. tomorrow at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park, home of seventh-seeded George Washington.
The 'Cats enter the tournament with a 32-19 ledger, a program record for regular season wins. Davidson posted a 14-10 clip in league play and won every series in league play with the exception of its first and last. Richmond enters the week with a 31-22 overall record, going 15-9 in conference action.

POSTSEASON PLAUDITS
Six Wildcats earned postseason honors, tying a new A-10 All-Academic record in the process. Junior catcher Eric Jones was tabbed Second Team All-Conference, narrowly missing first team recognition. Freshman outfielder Alex Mardiney was placed on the All-Rookie squad, and the junior quartet of infielder Max Bazin and relief pitchers Andrew Ashur, Austin Leonard, and Casey Sutherland were all named to the prestigious All-Academic team, tying for most from a single program in league history.
THE SERIES
Davidson is 18-27 all-time against the Spiders, the alma mater of skip Dick Cooke. The 'Cats took two-of-three from the Spiders on the road, winning the Friday game 6-2 and Saturday 3-0 but were unable to pull off the sweep. Junior Eric Jones hit .385 during the weekend, doubling in four of his five hits. Andrew Born scored four times, posting a .417 OBP. Senior southpaw Evan Roberts tossed the first complete game shutout of his career on Saturday, using just 103 pitches in the victory.
SCOUTING THE SPIDERS
Richmond boasts five All-Conference performers, led by first-team selections in starting pitcher Robbie Baker and reliever Layne Looney. Senior shortstop Vinny Capra, a second-team selection, leads the team with a .321 clip and .487 slugging. Capra also tops the team in runs (39), hits (60), and RBI (39). Baker, the likely starter for Wednesday, boasts a 2.28 ERA and a 9-1 record.
TOURNAMENT INFO
There will be four games on Wednesday and Thursday, including at least one consolation bracket elimination game each day. Friday's semifinal day has three games, two of which are elimination games. The championship final will be played Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
Tickets to the championship are $8.00 for adults, $4.00 for students, seniors and youth. An All-Session ticket book is available for $25.00 for adults and $12.00 for students, seniors and youth. Tickets may be purchased at the gate, or pre-purchased online via the link provided.
