ARLINGTON, Va. – On the eve of their 2018 Atlantic 10 Championship debut, six Davidson players earned postseason honors as announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon.
Leading the way was junior catcher Eric Jones, tabbed to the All-Conference Second Team and narrowly missing first team recognition, while freshman Alex Mardiney became the second-ever Davidson player to be named to the A-10 All-Rookie squad.
The Wildcats also placed a league-high four to the prestigious All-Academic team in juniors Max Bazin, Andrew Ashur, Austin Leonard, and Casey Sutherland.
Jones, a former National Player of the Week and two-time A-10 Player of the Week, leads the league in RBI (59) and ranks second in home runs (11), slugging (.595), total bases (113), and on-base percentage (.443). The Charlotte, N.C., product is nationally ranked in RBI and was named the 19thbest catcher in the NCAA (first amongst A-10) by d1baseball.com earlier this season in addition to being named to the Johnny Bench Award Watch List.
Mardiney missed a portion of the conference season due to injury, but spent the majority of his rookie campaign in right field. He recorded a career weekend against league-foe Saint Joseph's, where he launched his first and second career homers, doubled twice, drove in eight and scored five times. The Lutherville, Md., native has registered 11 multi-hit contests, including four with three hits each.
The junior quartet of Bazin, Ashur, Leonard, and Sutherland matched a league record, first set in 1993 Saint Joseph's, matched in 1999, by Duquesne and then tied again by SJU in 2001 as the most to be named All-Academic from a single program.
Bazin has served as the 'Cats everyday shortstop for the last two seasons, and boasts a team-best .329 average in conference play. He's recorded 14 multi-hit games this season, including four with three hits apiece. An economics major with a communications minor, the Charlotte, N.C., product is a member of Omicron Delta Epsilon, a national economics honor society as well as a member of SAAC and FCA.
Ashur, a double major in economics and Spanish, boasts a 2.25 ERA and has not allowed a run in his last five appearances, only allowing a run in three of his 12 outings. The Vienna, Va., southpaw and Bryan Scholar graduated from Davidson in just three years, and will become the CEO of LUCID, a startup company specializing in drone assisted building solutions.
Leonard, the third Charlotte native to represent the 'Cats via postseason plaudits, boasts a 2.75 ERA across a team-high 22 appearances, allowing just two extra-base hits in 19.2 innings. A biology major with a Spanish minor, Leonard will spend the summer as a member of a genetics research team on campus and volunteers at Serenity House, a hospice house in Mooresville.
Sutherland carries a team-best 1.82 ERA with a 2-0 record and six saves, holding batters to just a .189 clip. The righty has not surrendered a run in his last eight appearances, and ranks fourth in the league in saves. An economics major with a minor in applied math, the Apopka, Fla., product has already begun preparations for his thesis next school year, and is a member of FCA and SAAC.
The squad opens up A-10 tournament play Wednesday, facing fourth-seeded Richmond at 5 p.m.
