DAVIDSON, N.C. –Davidson baseball suffered their first series sweep of the season in their 2018 finale, falling in both games of a Saturday doubleheader to visiting Dayton at Wilson Field by scores of 12-1 and 8-6.
Despite the sweep, Davidson will advance to the Atlantic 10 Tournament, held next week in Washington, D.C. Seeding is yet to be determined.
Junior Max Bazin led the offense, posting two hits apiece in each contest. Senior Alec Acosta became the program leader in sacrifice flies after recording one in each game and now has 18 in his career. Classmate Andrew Born notched his first collegiate triple as part of a 2-for-5 day in Game 2, and Cam Johnson launched his sixth long ball of the season.
Acosta now also owns the program record for games played (205), and career at bats (811).
GAME 1: DAYTON 12, DAVIDSON 1
The Flyers capitalized on five errors in the first three innings to plate 11 runs. Davidson avoided the shutout in the fifth, after Born led off with a single, moved to second on a bunt single from Bazin, and moved to third on yet another single from Johnson before scoring on Acosta's flyout to right field.
Junior Andrew Ashur delivered another dynamic relief outing on the mound, striking out two in a scoreless frame. Ashur has not allowed an earned run in his last five appearances, dating all the way back to March 30.
GAME 2: DAYTON 8, DAVIDSON 6
The 'Cats nearly pulled off a comeback, trailing 8-3 heading into the eighth inning before scoring three runs.
Born led off the contest with the triple, scoring again on a flyout from Acosta. Davidson added two the following frame to take a 3-0 lead, after sophomore Brett Centracchio recorded his first of two hits on the day, then advanced on a wild pitch and scored on the first of two doubles on the day from freshman Alex Mardiney. Mardiney then scored on a sacrifice from sophomore Ward Coleman, giving the 'Cats the early advantage.
Dayton responded with a six-run third inning, then added two in the fourth to take the lead with insurance.
In the eighth, Johnson led off with a solo shot to center field, and then three straight hits from Centracchio and back-to-back doubles from junior Justin Lebek and Mardiney brought in two more.
Davidson threatened again in the ninth, leaving two men on.
