ORLANDO, Fla. – In addition to Davidson capturing the 2018 Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Championship, Mike Blasey claimed the individual title Sunday afternoon on the Par 72, 7,024-yard Villas of Grand Cypress layout.
The Wildcats, who led wire-to-wire, entered the final round eight strokes clear of preseason favorite Dayton, before winning their first conference tournament since 1968.
Davidson, which earns the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, finished the event with a 54-hole total of 891 (300-294-297). Dayton was runner-up six back of the 'Cats, while Rhode Island (+38), VCU (+40) and Richmond (+44) rounded out the Top-5.
The 2018 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships selections announcement will take place Wednesday, May 2 at 5:30 p.m. ET, on the Golf Channel and streamed live on the Golf Channel website. 81 teams and 45 individuals will be selected to compete in the six NCAA Men's Regional Championship sites, May 14-16 (13 teams and 10 individuals at three regionals and 14 teams and five individuals at three regionals).
A junior from Potomac, Md., Blasey (74-70-74) finished at 218 (+2) to win medalist by two shots over Rhode Island's Brody King (+4). The second straight (Jack Lang – 2017) Wildcat to bring home the individual crown, Blasey finished the three days with a tournament-best 15 birdies.
Blasey is eighth golfer in program history to win a conference championship.
Davidson's Alex Ross (75-72-74 = 221 | +5) finished tied for third to earn Most Outstanding Rookie (Championship) and Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year.
Junior Hoke Carlton turned in a 224 (+8) to join teammates Blasey and Ross in the Top-10, finishing tied for eighth out of 55 competitors.
Lang (78-75-77 = 230), the defending champ and member of this year's all-conference team, finished tied for 22nd, while sophomore Michael Freeman (237 | T-41st) bounced back with a crucial three-over 75.
For Davidson, its the third (Baseball - 2017; Men's Basketball - 2018) Atlantic 10 tournament team title since joining the league in July of 2014.
