Second Half Rally Gives Wildcats a 10-8 Road Win

PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Freshman Sam Rippley registered her first career hat trick and Davidson overcame a three-goal deficit in the second half with a 5-0 run on its way to a 10-8 Atlantic 10 road win at Duquesne Friday afternoon in women's lacrosse at Rooney Field.
Trailing 8-5 with close to five minutes run off the second half clock, Rippley started the winning rally with a goal at the 22:52 mark. The Wildcats went on to score four more goals, two of those by Rippley, in the final 18:11 to cap a 5-0 run and secure the 10-8 win.
Davidson snapped its three-game skid to improve to 8-7 on the year and 3-4 in A-10 action. The Dukes fell to 3-11 overall and 1-6 against league foes.
Joining Rippley with a hat trick was Shannon Blee, who had her fifth game with at least three goals or more. Sarah Kopp scored twice, while Christine Molinari had two points on a goal and an assist.
Shayne Antolini and Olivia Carey each chipped in an assist, giving the pair 20 apiece.
The Dukes were led by Haley Matthai's four points on three goals and an assist. Sarah Kollhoff had two goals and Michaela Connolly registered two points with a goal and an assist.
Matthai helped Duquesne jump out to a 3-1 lead with all three of her goals coming in the first 16 minutes. A Kopp goal made it 3-2, but the Dukes answered with a 3-1 run to make it 6-3 and just 3:48 left in the first half.
Blee scored her second goal of the game to close the first half and bring Davidson within 6-4.
Jordan Wood fired in her team-leading 35th score of the season at the 27:27 mark to start the second half, but Duquesne came back shortly thereafter with back-to-back scores at 25:26 and 25:13 to make it 8-5.
The rally began for the 'Cats after Rippley scored to make it 8-6, followed by Blee's second goal for an 8-7 score at 18:11.
A few minutes later, Rippley fired in another goal to tie the game and Molinari came up with her 19th goal of the season at 14:29 to give the Wildcats their first lead. Rippley topped the rally off with her eighth goal of the season on a free-position shot for a 10-8 score.
Davidson had an edge in shots, 30-24, while winning 12 draw controls.
Kopp once again had a strong all-around game with four groundballs, four draw controls and three caused turnovers. Sophia Sgroi, who had an assist, tallied four draw controls, while Antolini added three.
Goalie Rose Woolson came up with eight saves for her eighth win of the season.
Davidson remains on the road for a Sunday game at St. Bonaventure, with gametime set for 12 p.m.
