CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Davidson baseball slipped to 8-4 on the season after falling 12-1 Tuesday to No. 14 Virginia at Davenport Field.
Davidson was held to just four hits; senior Cam Johnson and sophomore Ward Coleman each doubled.
The 'Cats wasted no time, as Johnson took the first pitch and laced it down the left field line. He then scored on a fielding error from a connection by junior Eric Jones.
The lead was short lived, as Virginia used a single and capitalized on two throwing errors to plate two runs in the bottom of the first. They then added cushion in the third, taking advantage of a pair of wild pitches and sacrifice flies to go up 5-1.
Davidson threatened in the fifth, after senior Andrew Born singled on a tough ball near second base and Johnson walked to put two on, but both were stranded. They presented trouble again in the sixth, after Jones walked and freshman Alex Mardiney singled him to third. The bases were left loaded after Coleman worked a walk to put three on.
The Cavaliers continued to add insurance, using back-to-back two run shots in the fifth to take a 9-1 lead and then added a run in the sixth, two in the seventh
Davidson threatened again in the seventh, but the 'Cats stranded all three runners aboard once again after Mardiney smoked a ball down the first base line but it was caught by the first baseman.
Davidson returns home for a three-game series against fellow 2017 NCAA Participant Yale, beginning with a Saturday doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
