NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — For the third consecutive week, freshman Lindsay Song was named the Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week as announced today by the league office for matches played from March 19-25.
Song claims her fourth weekly honor overall this season and gives Davidson its sixth. The freshman from Birmingham, Ala., is just the second Wildcat since Davidson joined the A-10 to win at least four rookie of the week awards, joining Alexandra Abele who won the award five times in 2017.
In Davidson's lone match last week against Saint Louis, a 6-1 victory, Song went 2-0 in singles and doubles combined while keeping her perfect season intact in singles action. The Wildcats' No. 5 player rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 victory to move to 11-0 on the season, 7-0 at No. 5 position, and 4-0 in A-10 matches. The 11 straight wins ties a team season high this year.
Before her singles win, Song teamed with Ally Sexton at No. 3 doubles and the pair blanked their Billiken opponent, 6-0. The victory moved their season record to a team-best 8-4 with a 2-0 mark in league play.
Song's 11-match win streak is the fourth time in the past four years that a Wildcat has recorded a double-figure singles win streak in a season. Alexandra Abele had an 11-match streak this season, while Ava Todd twice has had double-digit win streaks of 11 (2017) and 16 (2015).
The Wildcats (13-2, 4-0 A-10) are next in action April 7 when they travel down Interstate 77 to face cross-county rival Charlotte at 1 p.m. They will be taking a season-high 10-match win streak into the match.
