
‘Cats Sweep A-10 W. Tennis Weekly Awards

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — After helping Davidson to finish perfect last week at 3-0, sophomore Alexandra Abele and freshman Lindsay Song were named the Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Player and Rookie of the Weeks, as announced by the league office for matches played from March 5-11.
The duo helped the Wildcats to wins over A-10 wins over Duquesne (6-1) and Saint Joseph's (6-1) as well as Coastal Carolina (4-3), pushing the team's win streak to a season-high seven in a row. The pair combined to go 7-1 in singles and doubles play on their way to claiming the A-10 weekly awards.
Abele and Song each won their second awards this season, while Abele picked up her seventh career weekly honor.
A sophomore from Cincinnati, Ohio, Abele had another impressive week by going 3-0 in singles action and then scoring a 6-4 doubles win with Samantha Armas at No. 3 for their first A-10 win. All three singles victories were in straight sets at No. 3, taking scores of 6-3, 7-5 vs. Duquesne and then 6-2, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-0 vs. Coastal Carolina and Saint Joseph's, respectively.
With the three singles wins, Abele pushed her winning streak to a season and personal-best 11 straight. She ran her season record to a team-high 11-1, getting nine of those wins at No. 3. The sophomore's doubles win on the week was her third on the year.
Song, a native of Birmingham, Ala., who won the league's rookie of the week, Feb. 14, went a combined 3-1 in singles and doubles last week. The freshman netted two of those wins in singles play and kept her perfect season intact at 8-0 after wins of 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-2 against A-10 foes Duquesne and Saint Josephs for her first collegiate league wins.
Teaming with Ally Sexton at No. 2 doubles, Song went 1-1 with the pair's one victory coming against the Dukes by the count of 6-2. The duo has a team-best record of 7-4 on the season with a 4-2 record at No. 2 position.
Davidson (10-2, 2-0 A-10) remains at home, where it is 8-1 on the season, to take on UMass in another A-10 match this Friday, March 16.
