DAVIDSON, N.C. — Sophia Sgroi had a career-high five points and Davidson snapped a three-game losing streak by holding off the Iona Gaels in a 10-8 win on a cold Wednesday night in women's lacrosse under the lights inside Richardson Stadium.
Sgroi tied her personal best with two goals and had a career-best three assists for her five points. Her second goal helped the Wildcats go up 8-3 early in the second half and then her final assist made it 10-5 with 11:35 left in the game.
Davidson, which wrapped up a three-game homestand tonight, evened its record to 3-3 on the season and remained perfect against the Gaels (5-3) in the all-time series, 3-0.
Seven Wildcats in all scored on the night, with Sarah Kopp and Shannon Blee joining Sgroi with two goals each. Christine Molinari and Shayne Antolini each had two points on a goal and an assist, pushing their season point totals to 21 and 16, respectively.
Also tallying two points was freshman Olivia Carey (goal and assist), while Jordan Wood scored her 12th goal of the season.
Iona had six players score, led by Pamela Giordano's and Jenna Tolzmann's two goals apiece. Giordano added an assist.
Behind back-to-back goals late in the first half from Kopp, Davidson took a 6-2 lead heading into halftime. It used a 3-0 run over the final nine and a half minutes to break free of Iona, which had closed to within 3-2 at the 14:03 mark.
After the Gaels made it 6-3 with three minutes gone in the second half, Carey and Sgroi scored their seventh goals each on free-position shots to made it 8-3 with under 20 minutes to go.
Iona answered with two goals of its own to get within five, but Molinari hooked up with Wood for what would be the eventual game-winner at the 12:04 mark. Shortly there after, Antolini netted her fourth goal of the season off Sgroi's assist and 11:35 on the clock.
The Gaels would score three straight to get within two at 10-8 and 7:54 left, but Davidson's defense played shutout ball the rest of the way to secure the win.
Picking up two big saves in the closing minutes was goalie Rose Woolson, who ended the night with her fourth double-digit save game of the year with 10 stops. The senior also scooped up four groundballs, tops on the team.
Davidson had a game-high 22 groundballs and went 13-of-14 on clear attempts. Both teams earned 10 draw controls, while Iona had a 25-24 edge on shots.
Sarah Kopp matched her career best with six draw controls, while Sgroi had the other four for the 'Cats. Claudia Becker forced two turnovers, as did Blee, while Natalie Junior, Rachel Hianik and Blee each scooped up three groundballs.
Davidson takes to the road this weekend for a game at Campbell, March 17, with game time set for 3 p.m.
