NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --- Coming off their most successful season in program history, which saw the Wildcats claim the first-ever conference title in its 115-year existence and proceed to sweep the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional, Davidson baseball was selected to finish fifth in the 2018 Atlantic 10 Preseason Coaches' Poll, as announced by the league Wednesday afternoon.
The 'Cats received two first-place votes and totaled 106 points, while Saint Louis was chosen to win the league with six first-place votes and 157 total points. The Billikens, who won the league in both 2014 and 2015 and last took the tournament crown in 2013, were named a Top 100 Program by d1baseball.com earlier this offseason.
Last year's regular season champion, VCU, garnered three first-place votes and 153 points to be selected second, while 2016 tournament champion Rhode Island was chosen to finish third at 146 points and two first-place votes. Narrowly finishing ahead of the 'Cats was George Mason (107 points), who won the tournament in 2014.
George Washington and Saint Joseph's round out the top seven, which is the number of teams that will compete in the A-10 Championship this spring in Washington, D.C.
Davidson returns a wealth of experience, welcoming back six position starters and two starting pitchers from 2017. The 'Cats begin their 2018 campaign Feb. 16, hosting Lafayette for a three-game series.
