NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Coming off a perfect week, sophomore Alexandra Abele won her first Atlantic 10 weekly honor this year with being named the player of the week, as announced by the league office for matches played from Feb. 20-27.
It marks the first career player of the week honor for Abele, who was named rookie of the week five times last year. She is also the second Wildcat this year to collect a weekly honor after Lindsay Song won the A-10 Rookie of the Week, Feb. 14.
The Cincinnati, Ohio, native helped lead Davidson to a 3-0 week in matches against USC-Upstate, Elon and Wingate all at home by going 3-0 herself in singles action at No. 2/3 position. The three victories pushed Abele's winning streak to eight straight, tying her personal-best she set last year.
Abele started the week with a 6-2, 7-6 win over USC-Upstate and then helped scored one of five team points by battling through a tight match vs. her Elon opponent, 6-4, 7-6(6). The sophomore then moved up to No. 2 singles to finish out the week and scored a 6-2, 6-3 win against Wingate.
An A-10 All-Second Team pick last year, Abele is a team-best 8-1 on the season, with a 6-1 record at No. 3. She is halfway to matching last year's win total of 16 and in just one and a half years, Abele owns a career singles mark of 24-5.
Davidson, riding a four-match win streak, heads to Florida for a pair of matches next week. It will open A-10 play against Duquesne, March 5, and then take on Coastal Carolina the next day. Both matches are at the USTA Center.
