RICHMOND, Va. — Davidson fell behind by 13 points in the first quarter and had to play catch up the rest of the way, battling to the end before running out of time and falling 62-53 to Richmond in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Tournament inside the Robins Center.
The Wildcats closed out their season at 12-18 overall, doubling last year's win total. Richmond (14-16) advances to face No. 1 seed Dayton in the quarterfinals at the Richmond Coliseum on Friday.
Senior Mackenzie Latt did all she could to try and keep the 'Cats season alive, scoring a team-best 22 points on 10-of-15 shooting. Freshman Katie Turner set a new single season record for three-pointers with three on the night to give her 75 for the season as she finished with 11 points.
Justine Lyon came off the bench to score 14 points, while Ally Welling was big on the glass with new career-high of 14 rebounds.
Richmond had just two players score in double figures, but Micaela Parson dropped in 30 points. Her sister, Alex, scored 11.
Trailing by as many as 16 points in the third quarter (39-23), Davidson tried its hardest to battle all the way back. After closing the quarter in a 14-5 run to make it 44-37, a pair of Welling jumpers halfway through fourth made it 46-41. But, the Spiders went back up by 10 at 55-45 behind seven points from the Parson sisters and just 1:04 left.
Davidson was not done, getting a triple each from Lyon and Turner at 45 and 37 seconds, respectively, and then a layup by Lyon made it 58-53 with 18 ticks left. Parson though sealed the win with four straight free throws to finish off her big scoring night.
After Richmond started the game hitting 8-of-13 field goals and going up 21-8 at the end of the first quarter, the Wildcats held it to just 12-of-43 shooting the rest of the game in trying to battle back.
The Wildcats got a fresh start in the second quarter, rattling off to a 10-1 run to close within 22-18 at the 5:11 mark. It was short-lived though, Richmond responded yet again with a 10-3 spurt to close the quarter and the first half up 32-21.
GAME NOTES: This was the seventh meeting all-time between both teams … Davidson is 2-5 in the series … it was the 'Cats first defeat on the road in the series vs. the Spiders … Mackenzie Latt's 20-point outing was her fourth of the season and the 14th of her career … Latt finished her career second all-time in rebounds and field goals made, third points, and fifth in blocks … she also is just the second player ever in program history to have over 1,500 points and 800 rebounds … Latt ended the season with 22 double-figure scoring games to give her 86 for her career, while finishing with 27 double-doubles … Turner ended the year riding an 11-game streak of scoring in double figures.
