
‘Cats Fall Short in Close 12-9 Defeat at William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — Despite another three-goal outing from Shannon Blee and three more points from Christine Molinari, Davidson dropped its first game of the season with a 12-9 setback at William & Mary Sunday afternoon in women' lacrosse.
Twice the Wildcats (2-1) got within two goals in the second half at 9-7 and 11-9, only to see the Tribe counter each time, including the final goal with 8:16 left. Davidson was held to just one more shot attempt in the closing eight minutes.
For the third straight game, Blee matched her career high with three goals, while Molinari pushed her season total to a team-best 14 points after a goal and two assists. Shayne Antolini registered her team-leading ninth assist, while Tess Reiman, Sophia Sgroi, Sarah Kopp, Jordan Wood and Katie Woodruff tallied a goal each.
William & Mary (2-1) had four multi-goal scorers who netted two goals each, while Abby Corkum and Eloise Gagnon had two assists apiece.
The shot count went to William & Mary, 34-20, while it also had a 24-18 edge in groundballs and one more draw control to Davidson's 11.
Trailing 4-0 early, the Wildcats responded with a 4-1 run in the middle of the first half, getting a pair of goals from Blee during the spurt to get within 5-4 and 10:50 left in the half. The Tribe though closed the half on its own run (4-0) to take a 9-4 halftime lead.
Blee and the Wildcats came out strong to start the new half, with the sophomore netting her ninth goal of the season followed by Molinari and Reiman (first collegiate goal) to make it 9-7 and nearly 22 minutes left.
A couple more goals from W&M pushed its lead back out to 11-7 before the 'Cats made one last push at the 12:09 and 10:04 marks with goals off the sticks of Woodruff and Sgroi to get the 'Cats within two again, this time at 11-9.
Rose Woolson took the defeat in goal for Davidson, recording a season-high tying 14 saves for the second game in a row, to go with two groundballs and a caused turnover.
Defender Rachel Hianik finished with a team-best four groundballs and two caused turnovers. Natalie Junior and Sgroi each scooped up four draw controls.
Davidson comes home to start a three-game homestand starting next Sunday, March 4, against Mercer at 1 p.m.
