Davidson Rolls to Season-Opening Win at Furman, 18-8

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Six Wildcats scored multiple goals in helping lead Davidson to an 18-8 season-opening win at Furman on a sunny Sunday afternoon at the Paladin Stadium in women's lacrosse.
The Wildcats (1-0), who were playing the Paladins for the first time in program history, opened the game scoring the first four goals, and seven of the first eight overall, in rolling to its first win in a season opener since 2015.
Pacing the offense was the quartet of Christine Molinari, Jordan Wood, Sarah Kopp and Shannon Blee with three goals each. Molinari finished with a team and career-high six points, adding three assists. Shayne Antolini dished out a personal-best five assists, while Wood added an assist for a career-best four points.
Freshman Olivia Carey and Sophia Sgroi netted two goals apiece, while Katie Woodruff and Genna Portner each scored once.
For Furman (1-2), Meg Lingo had four goals and an assist, while Sophie Brennan scored three times.
Davidson opened up with a 4-0 lead through 10 minutes of play, getting goals from Wood, Sgroi, Woodruff and Blee, while Antolni picked up her first assist.
After Furman scored its first goal of the game at the 17:12 mark, the Wildcats went back on the charge, getting back-to-back scores from Molinari at 11:44 and 11:35 to make it 6-1. Kopp added another goal to make it 7-1 with under five minutes to go.
The half end with another flurry of Wildcat goals, two coming off the stick of Blee, in the final two minutes for a 10-4 halftime lead.
Furman would cut its deficit to four twice in the second half, but the 'Cats halted any comeback attempt with an impressive 6-0 run to close the game and turn a 12-8 lead into an 18-8 final.
Davidson dominated in shots (34-15) and draw controls (21-7), while finishing with 18 groundballs and going 6-for-11 on free-position attempts.
Rose Woolson earned the win between the pipes, getting three groundballs and stopping two shots, while Delaney Guhman closed out the win. Blee had a career-best six draw controls, followed by freshman Natalie Junior and Sgroi with five and four, respectively.
Davidson will host Winthrop this coming Thursday, Feb. 22, for its home opener at 6:30 p.m. inside Richardson Stadium.
