LOOKING AT THE LEOPARDS
Lafayette is coming off a troublesome 2017 campaign, where the Leopards won just eight games. The team is led by All-Conference duo of junior John Selsor and senior Steven Cohen, who were chosen as Preseason All-Patriot League selections. Cohen posted a team-best .331 batting average and .534 slugging, while Selsor was right behind him with a .301 clip.
Despite their record, the Leopards clubbed 35 homers last year and totaled 150 extra-base hits, hitting .270 as a team. The squad returns 26 players, including six starters.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
Davidson leads the all-time series 11-6. The two teams last faced off in 2016, where the Wildcats bested Lafayette by taking two of the three-game series. Now-senior Cam Johnson tallied four hits and scored three times, while classmate Andrew Born also registered a hit and plated a run during the weekend.
THE DAVIDSON DUGOUT
At the cusp of its fourth season in the Atlantic 10, the 'Cats look to continue their uptrend in the league that has been dominated in recent years by powers like Rhode Island, Saint Louis, and VCU. After celebrating the first tournament title in program history and a school-record 35 wins, Davidson looks to seek its third consecutive trip to the Atlantic 10 Championship Game.
The Wildcats return 23 lettermen from 2017, including all three of their probable weekend rotation in juniors Allen Barry and Josh Hudson and senior Evan Roberts. Roberts delivered a brilliant postseason, and served as the Wildcats Sunday starter for all of last year. Barry also spent time in the weekend rotation before being sidelined with an injury, and returned in time to record the final out, a strikeout, nonetheless, in the 'Cats first Regional win over No. 2 national seed North Carolina.
Davidson was considered an offensive threat in 2017, and that title looks to remain the same. Despite losing their top two home run hitters who combined for 33 homers, senior Cam Johnson and junior Eric Jones each raked in nine last year, while fellow junior Justin Lebek wasn't far behind with seven. All three are expected to make an immediate impact in the Wildcat lineup.
Other returning standouts include 2017 A-10 Championship Co-MVP in senior Alec Acosta, shortstop Max Bazin, and relievers Austin Leonard and ZJ Zabinski.
