NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – Davidson swimmer Thacher Scannell is Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week for the third time this season, the conference has announced.
The freshman from Stamford, Conn., was also honored on Nov. 6 and Nov. 20.
To garner recognition for a third time, Scannell set a school record in the 1,650-yard freestyle Saturday while competing in the Winter Junior Nationals in Greensboro. His time of 15:36.73 beat the previous Wildcats record by more than two seconds.
Also an accomplished water polo player in high school, Scannell has embraced the challenge of the mile swim this year, telling Davidson coach John Young that he believes he can "out-suffer" his competition in the test of endurance.
Scannell and the Wildcats return to action Jan. 11 when they host UNC Wilmington in Charles A. Cannon Pool.
