DAVIDSON, N.C. — Sophomore Katie Turner led four Wildcats in double figures with a game-high 21 points and the Davidson women's basketball team won its season opener for the second straight year Wednesday night, downing Queens 80-47 in Belk Arena.
Turner was 6-of-10 from the floor, including hitting three triples, and went 6-of-7 from the charity stripe while pulling in six rebounds and dishing out three assists. The 20-point outing was the sophomore's third of her career.
Joining Turner in double digits was Kianna Speight (14 points), Cassidy Gould (12) and Kelly Fitzgerald (11, career-high). Sarah Donovan crashed the boards with a game-high 12, one off her personal best. She also dished out a career-high five dimes.
Davidson finished 9-of-23 from behind the arc, hitting six of them in the first quarter, while going 21-of-28 at the free-throw line.
It used a 13-0 run in the first quarter to go up 15, led 35-25 at the half, then pulled away with a 29-9 advantage in the third quarter, which included 11 straight Wildcat points and a 1-of-12 shooting effort by the Royals.
The Wildcats' lead peaked at 35 points (80-45) with 1:54 to play.
Queens was led by Kristian Eanes and Herning Wang, who scored 14 and 11 points, respectively.
Davidson plays its first road game this weekend when it travels to Charleston Southern Sunday, Nov. 11, for a 3 p.m. tip.
GAME NOTES: This was the first regular season meeting all-time between both teams, who have played each other in exhibition games in the past …the Wildcats are 19-19 overall in home openers (two of the year's results are incomplete) after tonight's win over Queens … they improved to 12-28 in season-openers …. tonight's game was the first time Davidson had opened the regular season at
home since the 2006-07 campaign when it faced off against UNC Asheville … Davidson scored 33 points off Queens' 30 turnovers … it pulled in a game-high 47 rebounds, 16 on the offensive side, matching last year's season best.
