NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – Davidson has swept the men's swimming and diving weekly awards in the Atlantic 10, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon.
Based on their performances against Old Dominion on Saturday, Crossan Cooper and Thacher Scannell are the A-10 performer and rookie of the week, respectively. They are recognized along with Davidson women Isabella McElrath and Hannah Gould, as the Wildcats claimed all four of the league's honors this week.
Against ODU, Cooper, a junior from Scottsboro, Ala., won the 500-yard freestyle (4:41.28) and the 200 individual medley (1:55.54), the latter of which helped clinch the team victory. Cooper was also second in the 1,000 free (9:41.92) behind Scannell, and the A-10 recognition is his second of the season (also Oct. 2).
"Crossan was huge for the Wildcats this weekend, matching up with some of ODU's top swimmers and coming through where we needed wins to stay in the meet," said Davidson coach John Young.
Scannell, a freshman from Stamford, Conn., won the 1,000 free in 9:41.58, placed second behind Cooper in the 500 free (4:44.34) and was part of the Wildcats' second-place 4x100 freestyle relay team (3:08.01).
"This is well deserved recognition for Thacher," said Young. "The energy and fearlessness that he brings to the pool has already made us a better team. When he geared up in his 1,000 on Saturday, he set the tone for our men."
