NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – For the second time this month, Davidson swimmer Thacher Scannell is the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon.
The freshman from Stamford, Conn., was also recognized on Nov. 6.
"Thacher has been an exceptional addition to the team," said Davidson assistant coach Haley Mitchell. "His competitive nature and drive to get his hand on the wall first make his races a ton of fun to watch and always gets the team hyped!"
This week's honor stems from Scannell's performance at the Bucknell Invitational over the weekend, where he helped the Wildcats finish second overall. Most notably, Scannell won the 1,650-yard freestyle in 15:40.80, posting the top time in the A-10 this season. He finished 2.03 seconds ahead of Georgetown's Michael Wheeler, who was the only competitor within 15 seconds of Scannell.
"He embraced the challenge of the 1,650," said Mitchell. "He made a good race plan and stuck to it, which is impressive for a first-year college athlete."
Scannell also joined Walter Dauksher, Ian Hentenaar and Brian Hynes on the Wildcats' winning 800 free relay team (6:41.34) and placed second in the 200 free (1:39.63).
Additionally, Scannell took fourth in the 500 free and was on Davidson's fourth-place 400 free relay team.
