DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson volleyball team is adding four members to its incoming class, head coach Chris Willis announced Thursday.
Joining the Wildcats next fall will be 2019 high school graduates Julia Black, Anela Davis, Paige Johnson and Madeline Wynn. All are at least 6-foot tall.
"I couldn't be more proud and excited about the incoming class," said Willis. "These four individuals are perfect fits for Davidson as a challenging academic institution. They will also raise the athleticism and talent level on the volleyball court. We're graduating an amazing class, and I think this incoming group can have a similar impact. I can't wait for Aug. 9 to get here."
• Julia Black | Setter | Sugar Land, Texas
Black played three years of varsity volleyball at Stephen F. Austin High, where she was a team leader in assists and a three-time captain and first-team all-district player. She helped her team win two district titles and one bi-district championship before missing much of her senior season with an injury.
Willis: "Julia is an athletic setter that will be ready to run a college level offense this fall. She also brings a presence at the net which will give us flexibility in our offensive and defensive systems."
• Anela Davis | Middle Blocker | Jacksonville Beach, Fla.
A four-year varsity player, Davis hails from Providence School, where she helped the Stallions win regional titles in 2017 and 2018. She hit .432 her senior year, with 255 kills, 99 blocks and 35 aces. She was a member of the All-First Coast Second Team.
Willis: "Anela has a unique set of athletic skills. She will give us the ability to play higher and faster at the net. She will be a significant point scorer for us on offense and defense."
• Paige Johnson | Outside Hitter | Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
Johnson helped Ponte Vedra High reach back-to-back state finals in 2016 and 2017, with the Sharks hoisting the 6A crown in 2017. A four-year varsity player and two-time First Coast First Team selection, Johnson had 285 kills, a .303 hitting percentage and 18 blocks as a senior captain.
Willis: "Paige is a high IQ outside hitter who has the potential to play six rotations. I'm excited to add another pin hitter to our program and think she'll compete for playing time this fall."
• Madeline Wynn | Middle Blocker | Savannah, Ga.
From Savannah Country Day School, Wynn is a three-year varsity veteran, who also excelled in basketball. Wynn was a team captain and two-time all-city pick, and she helped SCD reach the 2017 final four. At 6-2, she totaled 272 kills and 163 blocks as a senior.
Willis: "Madeline has a high ceiling as a middle hitter. She's a natural blocker and hits a hits a steep ball that will translate in the Atlantic 10. I can't wait to see her develop her strength and all-around game to make an impact in our program."
