RICHMOND, VA. – Davidson was unable to disrupt Atlantic 10 frontrunner VCU's winning ways and saw its season come to a close with a 3-0 loss at the Siegel Center Saturday night.
The 25-16, 25-18 and 25-20 loss dropped Davidson to 12-13 overall and 5-9 in the A-10.
"I'm proud of the effort and commitment of the team this year," said Davidson coach Chris Willis. "We had a lot of adversity and continued to strive for excellence."
With the win, VCU wrapped up its second straight Atlantic 10 regular season championship. The Rams (18-8) finished conference play 13-1.
A top-six finish is needed to qualify for the A-10 tournament, and the Wildcats entered Saturday tied for sixth with Saint Louis. But the Billikens, who finish the regular season Sunday against La Salle, own the tiebreaker regardless of their final match result.
Saturday's match capped the careers of four Davidson seniors: Ciera Cockrell, Katharine Franz, Mason Rooney and Sam Thompson.
"Mason, Ciera, Sam and Katharine were great examples of competitors and will be missed," said Willis.
At VCU, Cockrell led Davidson with nine kills, while Rooney had a team-best 17 assists. Junior Josie Treadwell had a team-high 15 digs.
VCU was led by the 17 kills of Gina Tuzzolo.
