DAYTON, Ohio – Freshman Henry Howell scored in the 101st minute to give Davidson's its fourth overtime victory of the season, a 1-0 (2ot) win over Dayton, in Atlantic 10 men's soccer action Saturday evening at Baujan Field.

Off to a 2-0-0 start in the league play for the first time since joining the A-10 in 2014, the Wildcats improve to 6-4-0 overall, while the Flyers fall to 4-4-4 and 0-2-1.

Just 32 seconds into the second overtime, Howell dribbled from the sideline to the middle of the field, and blasted a shot from about 25 yards away inside the far post for the game's only score.

In addition to an 8-1 difference in corners, the Wildcats finished with a 13-10 edge in shots.

Sawyer Gaffney was solid in goal again for Davidson stopping a game-high four shots for his third shutout of 2018.

Davidson had a great chance to break the scoreless tie in the 54th minute, but Jordan Hill's header off a Howell corner was saved and clear off the end line by a Flyer defender.

Howell also had an opportunity of his own, but hit the cross bar, while Jackson Bracy had a low drive turned away by the Dayton keeper.

Up Next
The Wildcats return to Alumni Stadium Wednesday for a 7 p.m. contest with Saint Joseph's.

Postgame Comments from Head Coach Matt Spear
A strong performance, exciting away win and three vital points in the conference.

Henry has a true scoring knack and his shot was lethal. A real scorcher.

Dayton started strong and we wobbled a bit early in the first half. But as the half wore on, we grew in to the game then really hit our stride in the second half and overtime.

I feel our system and process were really sharp so as the game stayed tied, we gained the upper hand. Winning our fourth overtime game also underlines the guys' fitness, poise and unity. We usually play more players than our opponent - including tonight - and we don't hesitate to rotate players.

It was a test for our Freshmen - to travel this far and face a hungry Conference foe that threw all they had at us. So new guys like Henry, Stef, Mateo, Lucas, Jack and Jackson got thrown in to the fire and rose to the challenge.

And older players like Sawyer, Jordan and John had strong games. Super happy too for Drew as he grew up in nearby Columbus and had a lot of family there.
