NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Atlantic 10 Conference released its annual women's basketball preseason rankings as well as all-conference and defensive teams Tuesday afternoon. For the third year in a row, the Wildcats placed a player on the preseason team with senior guard Justine Lyon earning her second straight preseason all-second team honors.
"Justine has approached everything with a sense of urgency and a higher level of confidence leading into this season," said head coach Gayle Coats Fulks. "She is a proven scorer in our league and has grown much more comfortable in our style over the last six months. As one of the most dynamic guards in our conference, we feel she is ready to have a breakout senior campaign."
A native of Durham, N.C., Lyon had another stellar season a year ago averaging 14.6 points a game and became the program's 20th player to reach 1,000 career points. The 2017 A-10 Most Improved Player registered 25 double-figure scoring games to push her career total to 51 and tallied four 20-point outings last year to give her 13 in her career. During the season, Lyon rattled off a personal-best 19-game streak of scoring in double figures.
Davidson, which was picked 11th with 72 points in the standings, returns 10 letter winners and three starters from last year's team that went 12-18 overall and 7-9 in A-10 games.
"Our program is excited to build on the momentum of last year's record-breaking year in the A-10," said Coats Fulks. "We return a lot of experience and production, and we feel that we have taken major steps forward in the off-season to put us in a position to win more games."
Davidson begins its season at home against Queens University of Charlotte, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m.
Duquesne were selected by the league's coaches as the 2018-19 Atlantic 10 Conference women's basketball preseason favorite. The Dukes garnered 12 first-place votes for a total of 194 points. Led by seniors Chassidy Omogrosso and Julijana Vojinovic, who were both named to the preseason first team, Duquesne finished 25-8 overall last year and 13-3 in the A-10.
Dayton, last year's regular season champion, was second in the 2018-19 poll with two first-place votes and 183 points. Finishing tied for third in this year's poll was Fordham and George Washington with 159 points.
The 2018-19 women's basketball season tips off on Tuesday, Nov. 6., with conference play beginning on Saturday, Jan. 5. The 2019 Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Championship will be hosted by Duquesne University on March 8-10, 2019, with the first round being held Tuesday, March 5 on the campuses of higher seeds.
