SEASON REWIND
The Wildcats have had a light season comparatively, competing in just three meets after the ADIDAS XC Challenge was canceled due to Hurricane Florence. Davidson opened the year with a youth movement at the Spider Alumni Open as the first seven 'Cats to cross the line were freshmen. Coleman Mitchell led the charge with a 5k time of 15:31.7, good for fifth overall. Senior Dylan Carmack debuted in 2018 at the Louisville Cross Country Classic, stopping the clock over 8,000-meters in 25:08.4 The final tune-up for championship season came Friday, Oct. 12 at the Royals XC Challenge. Freshman Trent Turbyfill led the squad with a 22nd place finish in 24:43.
PRESEASON COACHES' POLL
Prior to the start of the 2018 campaign, Davidson was tabbed to finish ninth in the A-10 Preseason Coaches Poll. The 'Cats graduated a pair of scorers from the 2017 team, but a deep class of rookies have come up big in spots this season. The 'Cats boast a pair of A-10 Rookie of the Week honorees in Coleman Mitchell and Trent Turbyfill.
SCOUTING THE FIELD
Eight squads enter the championship ranked regionally by the US Track & Field and Cross Country and Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The highest placed of the league, Saint Joseph's, ranks eighth in the Mid-Atlantic Poll. Defending champion and preseason favorite, Dayton, comes in at 10th in the Great Lakes Region. Other programs making the ranks; Duquesne, George Washington and La Salle in the Mid-Atlantic; Saint Louis (Midwest), George Mason (Southeast) and Massachusetts (Northeast).
COACHES COMMENTS - RENNY WALDRON
"We think we are coming to it at the right time; racing has been going well and the guys have been able to put in a great block of training over the past month. We are as ready as we can be and looking forward to being the best version of ourselves come Saturday."
2017 A-10 CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP
Dylan Carmack earned his first All-Conference honors, leading the team with a ninth place finish at Oatlands Plantation last October. The then-junior made an early move that kept him in contention through the 8k championship and helped him stop the clock at 25:34.3. Ian Robertson '18 was next across the line for the 'Cats. Dayton University won their second consecutive championship followed by Saint Joseph's and George Washington.
UP NEXT
Davidson will head just south of Charlotte to Winthrop Farms for the NCAA Southeast Regional Meet hosted by Winthrop University, Friday, Nov. 9.
