Women's Cross Country Wins Royals XC Challenge

CHARLOTTE – The Davidson women's cross country team won the Royals XC Challenge Friday afternoon at McAlpine Park.
The Wildcats registered 112 total points to edge out Morehead State (117) in a 41-team field filled with ranked Division II squads and fellow Division I opponents.
Leading the way for Davidson was senior Caroline Yarbrough. The Greensboro, N.C., native placed third overall with a new cross country 5k personal best time of 17:04. Classmate Sophia Mills is also hitting her stride late in her collegiate career, setting a new PR of 17:38 to place 12th of 412 competitors.
In fact, all five scoring member of the Wildcats set personal best times. Freshman Rachel Shapiro stepped up big to take 22nd (18:00), with junior Katie MacTurk in 35th (18:17) and classmate Paige McKinney claiming 45th (18:25) in a deep field.
"This was a great tune-up for the conference championship," said Director of Cross Country/Track and Field Jen Straub. "Having all five of our scorers set new personal best times gives us hope for a great performance in two weeks!"
The Wildcats return to the start line Saturday, Oct. 27 at the Atlantic 10 Championship in Mechanicsville, Va.
