CHARLOTTE – The Davidson men's cross country team competed at the Royals XC Challenge Friday afternoon at McAlpine Park.
Leading the way for Davidson was freshman Trent Turbyfill. Turbyfill traversed the 8k course in 24:43 to take 22nd overall.
The Wildcats placed sixth as a team, registering 172 points. Host Queens won the event with 58 points, while Mount Olive (62) and Morehead State (73) rounded out the top three squads.
Davidson's young 'Cats took four of the top five scoring spots on the day. Rookie Mitchell Coleman was 26th with a time of 24:51, while classmate Colin Ross crossed the line in 25:06. Rounding out the scoring was senior Will Jones (25:09) and Max Pearson (25:16).
"Today was a solid effort from our team. For four of our top five guys it was their first 8k of the season, so it was great to finally get out there and race," said head coach Renny Waldron. "We are happy with our progression and are looking forward to the Atlantic 10 Championship in two weeks."
The Wildcats return to the start line Saturday, Oct. 27 at the Atlantic 10 Championship in Mechanicsville, Va.
