NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Freshman starting point guard Katie Turner nabbed her second Atlantic 10 weekly women's basketball award when she was named the co-rookie of the week, as announced by the league office for games played from Jan. 22-28.
Turner, who shared the award with Tera Reed of VCU, claimed her second rookie of the week honor after winning it on Dec. 26. Sarah Donovan also won the rookie of the week award back on Nov. 20.
The Reno, Nev., native averaged 13.5 points and 7.5 rebounds a game for the week, hitting the double-digit mark in points in both home games against UMass and Dayton. She also dished out seven assists and pocketed five steals.
The freshman registered her first career double-double against Dayton, tallying 16 points on 7-of-14 shooting, including a couple three-balls, and pulling in a season-best 11 rebounds.
During a double-overtime win last Wednesday at home against UMass, Turner, despite a tough shooting night (3-of-16), scored 11 points, pulled in four rebounds, dished out four assists and pocketed a season-high tying three steals in a season-best 47 minutes.
On the season, Turner is third on the team in scoring at 10.4 points per game, and has team highs of 50 three-pointers and 75 assists. The 50 threes rank just outside the Wildcat top-10 single-season record book, while she is seventh in the A-10 in three-pointers per game (2.3) and percentage (.397).
Davidson will next travel to Rhode Island on the 31st to end January for an Education Day game at 11:30 a.m.
