DAVIDSON, N.C. – Joel Tyson has been named assistant/goalkeepers coach, while former Wildcat Alec Rotunda '16 will serve as a volunteer assistant, Davidson head men's soccer coach Matt Spear announced on Wednesday.
Joel Tyson – Assistant / Goalkeepers Coach
Current goalkeeper coach with the Charlotte Independence (USL), Joel Tyson is no stranger to the collegiate level.
Prior to his current position, Tyson served on the staff at the University of Central Florida. In addition, he spent four seasons as an assistant at Wofford College, where he helped the Terriers to back-to-back Southern Conference regular season titles.
Tyson got his start in coaching at Hofstra University, where he worked primarily with the goalkeepers and assisted in all aspects of the program's day-to-day operations.
A native of Irmo, S.C., Tyson played collegiately at Coker as two-year team captain and helped the program to the highest win total in school history in his senior season. He graduated in 2008 with degrees in history and political science.
Comments from Coach Spear
"Coach Dalby and I are excited to have Joel join our program's mission of impacting the players' development and elevating the team's standards of excellence," said Spear. "I have known Joel for many years and I have always been impressed by his professionalism, communication skills and conviction. Plus his perspectives working with the pro level will certainly give us new, valuable insights because we like the players are always learning, evolving and striving."
Comments from Tyson
"Prior to joining the Charlotte Independence, I spent several years coaching at the college level. The enjoyment of developing and growing those players and more importantly, the relationships with those players, make college soccer such a unique environment. This opportunity at Davidson allows me that access again and also allows me the opportunity to continue my growth as a coach by being able to work with a great program and great staff. Coach Spear has been a staple in the College soccer community for so long and I look forward to working with him and Greg Dalby".
Alec Rotunda – Volunteer Assistant Coach
A four-year letterwinner for the Wildcats, Rotunda capped his collegiate career as the team's top goal scorer in 2015.
Along with receiving the team's Champion Award, he was also the recipient of the Thomas D. Sparrow Award: Presented to a senior male athlete best exemplifying the Davidson spirit in intercollegiate athletics and campus leadership, as well as the Goodwin Exxon Award: For exemplifying the highest standards of character, good sportsmanship, friendliness, and consideration for others.
Following graduation, Rotunda was awarded a Watson Fellowship: to learn about personal growth and talent development from a wide-variety of innovative soccer with education organizations in seven different countries.
Rotunda currently serves on Davidson College's Advising Corps at Mooresville High School to increase the number of low-income, first-generation college and underrepresented high school students who enter and complete higher education.
Comments from Coach Spear
"As a player, Alec was a true competitor and a fantastic teammate. He came through a significant injury and scored big goals. Off the field, he was super involved such as Honor Council chair, hall counselor and Athletic Fund volunteer just to name a few. So he has a wealth of insights and experience - not to mention traveling the soccer globe for the past year - to add to the group."
Comments from Rotunda
"I'm grateful to Coach Spear and Coach Dalby for the opportunity to contribute and develop as a coach at Davidson. We have a responsible group of young, talented players, and I couldn't be more thrilled to move forward together on and off the pitch."
