WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Sarah Sears broke the Wake Forest Invitational 3,000-meter meet record Saturday afternoon at JDL Fast Track as Davidson women's track and field took to the track for the first time in 2018.
Sears, who stopped the clock in 9:33.50, broke the previous meet record (9:42.56) set in 2016 and reset the program record (9:46.76) set by Caroline Yarbrough in December. Yarbrough came in second behind her teammate with a time of 9:57.76.
Junior Tori Long snapped her own school record in the 400-meters. The Greenwood, Indiana, native crossed the line in 59.06 seconds and holds the four fastest indoor 400-meter runs in program history. Classmate Stephanie Hautamaa also broke her own program record in the pole vault, clearing 3.45-meters (11'3.75), good for fourth overall. Hautamaa previously cleared 3.40m on two occasions.
Davidson went 2-3 in the mile with led by sophomore Maddie Hunter's first sub 5-minute performance. Hunter came in second with a new personal best time of 4:59.28, the fourth sub 5-minute mile in program history and third in the last two seasons. Senior Sierra Ponthier followed her across the line in third (5:04.79), while Sophia Mills was sixth (5:10.16).
Two Wildcats finished in the top four of the 800-meter run as freshman Eleni Daughters took second (2:16.76) and junior Claire Nieusma (2:19.29) competed in the half-mile.
Sophomore Makayla Binter set a new personal best in the long jump with the ninth best mark of the day. Binter stretched the tape 5.26-meters (17'3.25) on her fifth of six attempts to jump into ninth.
"The women had a really strong meet today! Sarah Sears continues to impress as she crushed the indoor 3k record. Tori Long breaking her own 400 record was also great to see," said Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Jen Straub. "It was also great to see Eleni Daughters and Maddie Hunter set personal bests so early in the season."
Davidson returns to the track Saturday, Jan. 27 at the BU Terrier Invitational hosted by Boston University.
