LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Davidson women's cross country team returned to the trails for the first time since landing in the Southeast Region poll at the Louisville Sports Commission Cross Country Classic at Sawyer State Park Saturday.
The Wildcats placed 17th overall in a loaded field as Sawyer State Park will host the 2017 NCAA Division I National Championship in November, bringing out some of the best teams in the nation to preview the course. Senior Sarah Sears continued to improve, besting her 5k cross country time for the third time in as many tries (17:19.27). The Arlington, Va., native crossed the line in 37th overall.
"The women turned in an impressive performance against a nationally ranked field. Sarah Sears ran another personal best with a stellar time of 17:19 and Caroline Yarbrough, who ran a season PR. Laurel Sheffield had a breakout performance running her fastest time of the season," said director of cross country/track and field Jen Straub.
Boise State took the individual and team title, registering 74 points. Wisconsin (101), Furman (122), Minnesota (125) and Northern Arizona (172) rounded out the top five teams. Davidson tallied 444 points for 17th place. The 'Cats five scorers averaged 17:54, down from 18:12 last year at the same event.
Davidson sophomore Caroline Yarbrough continued to improve, placing 67th and stopping the clock in 17:40.12. Senior Sierra Ponthier was next, stopping the clock in 18:01.17, while classmate Laurel Sheffield improved to 18:09.43. The Wildcats had a spot of bad luck when sophomore Maddie Hunter got tangled with a competitor that dislodged her shoe just 1k into the race. The Charlottesville, Va., native fought through the final 4k to finish fifth for the team.
"Sierra Ponthier continues to run well, while we got to see Allison Cheeseman for the first time this season and finish strong" said Straub. "Maddie Hunter, running with Sarah and Caroline early, lost a shoe when clipped from behind but still managed to keep us in the game. Her brave performance is noted. The team's resilience was a strong point and I look forward to the rest of the season."
Davidson returns to the trails Friday, Oct. 13 at the Royals XC Challenge hosted by Queens University at the familiar McAlpine Park in Charlotte.
