LEESBURG, Va. – Davidson junior Dylan Carmack paced the field, crossing the line in first at the Mason XC Invitational Saturday at Oatlands Plantation. The course was a preview of next month's Atlantic 10 Championship meet.
"Today was definitely a good sign of the progress that Dylan has made. He has a lot of work to put in this month, but he is up to the task," said head coach Renny Waldron. "He ran very tough today and to get the win was a good first step towards accomplishing the things he is capable of doing this year."
Carmack ran the 8k course in 25:29 for a five second win, helping the Wildcats take fifth overall. Fellow A-10 foe St. Joseph's won the meet, tallying 34 points. Duquesne (66), George Mason (79), Norfolk State (81) and Davidson (145) rounded out the top five teams.
Next across the line for the 'Cats was sophomore Alex Hazan in 29th place. The Matthews, N.C., native stopped the clock in 26:42. Sam Thomas was next in 38th (27:02), Will Jones in 48th (27:23) and Jake Carver rounded out the Wildcat scoring, corssing the line in 53rd (27:48). Senior Ramsay Ritchie, who led Davidson through the first two races, pulled out with a lower leg injury, but is expected to return healthy when the 'Cats return to the start line in two weeks.
"Our guys ran very patiently on this course, going out conservatively and then moving up nicely throughout the race. It was a really good experience for us to see this course ahead of the A-10 Championship. Overall it was great to see the improvement from race to race, and hopefully we will be at full strength come championship time," said Waldron.
Davidson returns to the trails Friday, Oct. 13 at the Royals XC Challenge hosted by Queens University at the familiar McAlpine Park in Charlotte.
