DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson jumped out to a 42-7 halftime lead with six different 'Cats finding the end zone in a 42-21 Homecoming win over Guilford Saturday night at Richardson Stadium.
With the win Davidson improves to 2-1, while the loss drops the Quakers to 2-1 overall. The Homecoming win in front over 4,600 fans is the first since 2008 for the 'Cats.
Following punts on their first two possessions, Davidson rattled off touchdowns on each of their final five drives of the half.
Returning to the Wildcat lineup for the first time this season was sophomore Keylan Brown, who made an immediate impact. The Jacksonville, Fla., native set up the 'Cats first touchdown with 54 yards on the drive, including a 42-yard rush to set up his team deep inside Guilford territory. Freshman quarterback Tyler Phelps kept it himself off a bobbled snap for a 1-yard score to put Davidson on the board.
Brown was paid off for his efforts on the next possession, punching through for a five-yard touchdown run, his first of the season. The third scoring drive featured a heavy dose of William Wicks, whose three consecutive receptions brought the 'Cats into the red zone where, for the third consecutive game, freshman halfback Wesley Dugger found the end zone.
A team that turned Western Carolina over on special teams twice last week, capitalized on another blunder as freshman wide receiver Pat Tabor blocked a Quaker punt that was returned 28-yards for the score by senior Austin Wells. The blocked punt for a touchdown was the first for Davidson since the undefeated 2000 season against Austin Peay.
Following the only Guilford score of the first half, Phelps connected with Wicks for an 87-yard touchdown down the nearside of the field to make it 35-7. The 'Cats added one more before the intermission, a 19-yard scoring reception for Tabor, his second of the season. Wicks finished with a career-high nine receptions for 171 yards and the score, while Tabor and senior Jaris Scott caught four passes each.
The Quakers, who entered the game averaging 600.5 yards-per-game were held by the Davidson defense to 408 yards, but did score the only two touchdowns of the second half. The Wildcat defense sacked Quaker quarterback Karsten Miller six times, including 1.5 by sophomore Bryce Perry-Martin. Miller, however, still provided bug plays for his team, completing 16 passes for 373 yards, finding a favorite target in Kylil Miller – seven catches for 192 yards and a touchdown.
The Wildcat offense put up 385 yards as Phelps threw for 246 yards on 20 completions in his first career start. Dugger rushed 12 times for 64 yards, while Brown finished with 59 on the ground.
Davidson returns to action Saturday, Sept. 30 back at home in the PFL opener against Marist. Kickoff from Richardson Stadium is slated for 1 p.m.
