Sears Paces Women's XC to 3rd Place at XC Challenge

CARY, N.C. – Behind another personal best performance from senior Sarah Sears, the Davidson women's cross country team earned a third place result at the Adidas XC Challenge hosted by NC State at WakeMed Soccer Park Friday evening.
The Wildcats registered 79 points to take third overall, ahead of Atlantic 10 foe Richmond in fourth and regionally ranked No. 5, Wake Forest in fifth. Davidson also edged out Elon who ranks 12th in the USTFCCCA Southeast Region Poll.
Sears PR (17:23.6) is the second in as many meets for the veteran runner and nearly 27 seconds faster than her time at the Charlotte Preview Meet two weeks ago (17:50.3). Sophomore Maddie Hunter also notched a new personal best time of 17:41.6, crossing the line in 11th.
"I couldn't be more pleased with how the women ran today. Although early in the season, the team competed against a stellar field" said director of cross country/track and field Jen Straub.
Junior Caroline Yarbrough placed 14th, stopping the clock in 17:46.3, while senior Sierra Ponthier broke 18:00 for the first time in her career (17:55.6), good for 20th. Senior Laurel Sheffield was the final 'Cat to score, coming home in 34th (18:20.4).
"Our top 3, Sarah Sears, Maddie Hunter, and Caroline Yarbrough ran aggressively and put us in a strong position early, making the way for Sierra Ponthier to have a breakthrough race today!"
Davidson returns to the starting line Saturday, Sept. 30 at the Greater Louisville Classic.
