DAVIDSON, N.C. – Ned Morrissett scored his second goal in as many contests and set up another to extend Davidson's unbeaten streak, as the Wildcats blanked Wofford, 3-0, in non-conference men's soccer action Friday at Alumni Stadium.
With the victory, Davidson matches its best start since the 1982 season, improving to 5-0-1.
Jaylen Thompson put the 'Cats up 1-0 in the 30th minute when he tracked down a Coleman Richards' shot and found the open net.
With just under a minute to play in the first half, Quinn Dudek converted his one-on-one opportunity thanks to a Morrissett feed to give Davidson a two-goal lead at the break.
Morrissett, who netted his first career goal in the 'Cats' 1-1 (2OT) draw with High Point Tuesday, put the game out reach with 5:13 to play. The insurance goal was played through by freshman Hugh Chatham.
Sawyer Gaffney faced 10 shots for the Wildcats en route to his first career shutout.
Like Wofford (0-6-0), Davidson attempted 10 shots, six on frame and finished with a 7-3 margin in corner kicks.
Up Next
Davidson will begin a two-game ACC road trip Tuesday with a 7 p.m. kickoff at Virginia Tech, before playing Virginia in Charlottesville on Monday, Sept. 25.
Postgame Notes
Matthew Gandier's place in the tonight's starting lineup makes him the 18th different Wildcat to start this season... Davidson has featured a different starting lineup in each of its first six contests.
Postgame Comments from Head Coach Matt Spear
"A solid win with a shutout and 3 goals as the perks. Coleman continued his influence off the bench by working hard to help create Jaylen's opening goal – and that's a big boost for Jaylen too."
"Quinn's goal was excellent – very good, skillful movement forward in traffic and then a clinical finish. And super happy for fellow freshman, local guy Hugh to get the assist for Ned's game-ending goal."
"Wofford had a couple golden chances to get on the scoreboard, so we know we needed to still get better. Our play wasn't as sharp as it can be at times. Fatigue can never be an excuse."
"This was our fifth game in 13 days; to get through that with no losses is really good. We've been able to change our starting line-up each match and to rotate a lot of players. And tonight for 21 guys to get on the pitch was great for morale."
