NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Atlantic 10 Conference this afternoon released the league opponent dates for each team as the Davidson women's basketball team found out when they will be playing their 13 league opponents.
With the release of the league dates, the Wildcats' 2017-18 schedule is set after they released their non-conference slate back in July.
Entering its fourth year in the A-10, Davidson will face each of the 13 conference opponents during the 16-game league schedule that features eight home and eight away games. This year the Wildcats open A-10 play on the road on New Year's Eve against George Mason, the only time they will play the Patriots this year after facing them twice a year ago and splitting the series.
Starting the new calendar year will be home games against Duquesne (Jan. 4) and Rhode Island (Jan. 7). The 'Cats face the Rams twice this year for the first time since joining the A-10. Last year saw Davidson score a 74-64 home win to secure its first win the series that is just four games old.
Other home games feature George Washington (Jan. 17), which has won the A-10 tournament title two of the past three years, Massachusetts (Jan. 24), Dayton (Jan. 27), last year's tournament winner, Fordham (Feb. 10) and Saint Joseph's (Feb. 14). Closing out the year, Davidson will play a home game against VCU, Feb. 24.
Games on the road will feature Fordham (Jan. 10), Richmond (Jan. 14), St. Bonaventure (Jan. 20), Rhode Island (Jan. 31 and Saint Louis (Feb. 4). Prior to hosting VCU to close out the year, Davidson will have back-to-back road games at UMass (Feb. 17) and La Salle (Feb. 21).
The home and home series will see the Wildcats face Fordham, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. It marks the fourth year in a row the 'Cats face Fordham twice. Both teams met last year in the first round of the A-10 Tournament on the campus of the Rams, with Davidson dropping a close 62-54 decision.
Davidson returns eight letterwinners from last year's team that went 4-12 in league play. Leading the way will be the top two returning scorers senior Mackenzie Latt, a former A-10 All-Rookie Team member, and junior Justine Lyon, who was named the A-10 Most Improved Player last year. Latt became the program's 19th player to reach 1,000-career points last year and averaged 13.7 points a game and hauled in a team-best 7.4 rebounds. She has 19 career double-doubles, including six last season.
The junior Lyon had career highs in every offensive and defensive category in her second year last season, pouring in nearly 16 points (15.7) a game, tops on the team and good for third-most in the A-10. She was even better in league games, scoring at a 19.5 points per game clip. The Durham, N.C., native had a pair of 30-point outings and recorded a team-best nine 20-point games.
During the 2016-17 season, the A-10 had six women's basketball teams qualify for postseason play. It was the 12th consecutive year that the A-10 has had at least five teams compete in the postseason. Top-seeded Dayton defeated seventh-seeded Duquesne in the 2017 Championship final at the Richmond Coliseum, earning the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Flyers earned their first conference title since 2012.
The 2018 A-10 Championship will feature six first-round games being played on campus sites on Tuesday, Feb. 27 before heading to Richmond, Friday, March 2 through Sunday, March 4 for the quarterfinals, semifinals and championship final games. The top two championship seeds will receive a bye, with the remainder of the field facing off in games hosted by seeds 3-8 for the first round. For the second consecutive year, the women's championship will place an increased emphasis on the regular season in a fan friendly format.
