CONCORD, N.C. – The Davidson women's cross country team opened the season with a head-to-head victory over Charlotte Friday at Frank Liske Park.
The 'Cats claimed the Charlotte Preview meet powered by a 2-3-4 finish led by senior Sarah Sears. The Arlington, Va., native ran a new personal best time over a 5k cross country course, stopping the clock at 17:50. Sears was followed by teammates Maddie Hunter (18:05) and Caroline Yarbrough (18:21).
"I'm very happy with the way the team competed against a strong Charlotte team," said director of cross country/track and field Jen Straub. "Sarah Sears led a very strong team and I am excited to the team grow this fall."
Charlotte All-American Caroline Sang claimed the individual win, snapping the tape in 17:27. The 'Cats tallied 22 points, while the 49ers finished with 37.
The Wildcat contingent dominated the front of the race as senior's Laurel Sheffield and Sierra Ponthier came home in sixth and seventh place to stop the scoring at 22 points and help their team take the win. Sophomore Susannah Cate rounded out the Davidson top-six.
"This meet was a way for me to assess where the team stands in relation to last year, so we can execute training plans going forward," said Straub.
Davidson returns to the start line Friday, Sep. 15 at the Adidas CC Challenge hosted by NC State in Cary, N.C.
