Davidson student-athletes do a lot of amazing things over the summer. They travel, they learn, they work, they volunteer, they compete and much more with a focus on striving.
This series has featured a few men's soccer players, with our final one being rising senior Nathan Marder from Charlotte, N.C.
Heading in to your senior year, tell us about your summer.
This summer has been busy for me. My internship started basically the day after I finished my final exam and concluded the day before I reported to school for preseason. I've also been fortunate enough to travel some this summer, going to Colorado, Phoenix, D.C., Atlanta, Utah, Oklahoma City, Chicago and Dayton for work and Florence, Rome, and Venice with my family. Outside of that, I've worked two Davidson soccer camps, which are always a nice chance to hang with some of the guys, meet some of the incoming freshmen, and help kids.
Go in to more detail about the internship.
My job this summer was to manage the 2017 Adidas Nemeziz tour. Adidas came out with a brand new line of soccer footwear this summer and my internship included working with Adidas, SOCCER.COM, and AC&M (a charlotte based marketing firm) to promote the new footwear. When I wasn't in the Charlotte office, I traveled over 8,000 miles in a cargo van with a picture of Messi on one side and a picture of Firmiño on the other side to promote the cleats and let kids try on the footwear at different youth soccer tournaments all over the country. While it was a lot of traveling and maybe one too many fast food stops along the way, it definitely beat sitting at a desk all summer. The tour ended in Chicago for the MLS All Star week, which was a lot of fun. We had a lot to do but I also was able to go the game and see Real Madrid take vs. MLS. It was a positive experience and definitely something I'll remember whether I choose to continue with sports marketing or not.
How could it impact future employment?
I'm still not 100% sure what I want to do after graduation but this experience at least gave me a chance to see what it would be like to work in marketing. Working with adidas and soccer.com gave me the chance to combine that real world experience with soccer. But I'm still flirting with the idea of grad school so I'll have to see what this upcoming year has in store before making any major decisions for life after Davidson.
