DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson women's cross country team returns a strong core of runners to the start line in 2017 and were tabbed to finish third in the Atlantic 10 announced by the league Wednesday.
The Wildcats welcome back six-of-seven competitors from the 2016 fourth place Atlantic 10 Championship squad. Caroline Yarbrough led the way for the 'Cats at last years league championship, placing ninth overall and earning All-Conference honors. Since then, Yarbrough won a pair of A-10 track titles, defending her indoor 3k crown before claiming the outdoor 5k championship.
Davidson went on to finish 18th at the NCAA Southeast Regional Meet and was led by Laurel Sheffield over the 6k course. Other returning scorers from the championship meets include Sarah Sears, Susannah Cate, Maddie Hunter and Sierra Ponthier.
With an experienced group returning to the trails this season, the league coaches voted Davidson to place third in the 2017 A-10 Coaches Poll. Defending champion Richmond and runner-up Dayton were placed ahead of the Wildcats, with Duquesne and George Washington rounding out the top-five.
Straub will be without Hayden Bates who took fifth in both the A-10 and NCAA Southeast meets. The 'Cats also graduated Watson Fellowship honoree Rachel McKay, Caroline Turner and Hannah Rieden.
The schedule features five meets prior to the A-10 Championship beginning with the Charlotte Preview Meet Friday, Sept. 1. The league champs are slated for Saturday, Oct. 28, while the NCAA Regional will go off Friday, Nov. 10.
